When you have a preference about which of two competing forces will prevail, you are giving power in your mind to the world (or your belief in it). A Course in Miracles teaches you to give your power to God (or the Holy Spirit) instead of the world. When the only purpose you see for the world is the healing of God’s Son, you will no longer be under the world’s laws of violence and death.
